Gloom.

Is it a coincidence that gloom rhymes with doom? I think not!

In these days of isolation and restrictions I guess it’s easy to dwell on the negatives. I’m guilty of it at times, but try to check myself.

In last week’s post I talked about things that make other things happy. This week I’m not talking about a color I love, I’m talking about warmth. Energy. Light!

 That sometimes-elusive Mr. Sun.

When I paint a landscape, I’m looking for that beam of light that change shapes and colors with how it washes across my view. Just as intriguing to me is how sunlight paints the shadows. If I’m lucky I’ll find all that in the same scene!

I think it’s safe to say that with landscapes, most people are drawn to a majestic view: colossal mountains backlit by a pastel sunrise…or a fiery sunset rippling across breaking waves of an ocean.

Yeah, I get it. I like those scenes that make me go “ooh! and ahh!” too.

But I guess with my art, I’m looking for something less trite. A little more unexpected. More humble views. There’s so much to see that’s right under our noses. Little scenes made memorable with the right light.

The painting in this article is the view I have while drinking my morning coffee. Unfortunately, where I live, most mornings Mr. Sun sleeps in and I don’t get this same view. Well screw him! I painted this so that even on a gloomy day, I can forever still feel the warmth of that one.

I see Van Gogh sulking in the corner,..

I know that view! Mr. Sun on wood - warm and luminous. Love it.
